Zulick & Astro (rescued with the late Troy, Opal, Melody, Meadow, Omelia)
Known now as the ‘Bachelors’, these were some of the sanctuaries very first rescued chickens. Saved from slaughter at 9 weeks old from a backyard chicken depot, these babies were absolutely terrified of humans and would all huddle together in the nearest corner whenever someone would approach them. Not long after their arrival, they learned what it meant to be loved unconditionally. They quickly came out of their shells (excuse the pun) and enjoyed cuddling on the laps of the many sanctuary visitors who spent time with them.
Quinn, Juno & (late) Blackstrap
A sanctuary representative found these babies among hundreds of other day-old chicks ready to be sold to the highest bidder at an animal feed depot. Crammed in a 50x50cm box with a hundred chicks, terrified, already sprayed with chemicals and vaccinations, at not even 24 hours old, destined to spend the following 5-9 weeks of their lives being fattened up for slaughter. Thankfully, three babies were surrendered to the sanctuary.
